jenlar's adventure into excessive randomness: whatever's on my mind...

This is just a spot for my random musings on the things that I enjoy... family, friends, music, TV, pop culture, and all things Disney. I probably won't be doing any "deep thoughts" types of entries. It's all about having fun. Enjoy!

Pin Collecting: What Now???

Jerry and I always said that we were never going to collect pins.

In the beginning, we both enjoyed our individual collections of Disney books & magazines, monorail stuff, Kitchen Kabaret items, and posters/artwork used in the parks. You know... stuff that was slightly difficult to find. We also bought an occasional pin to commemorate celebrations that we attended each year... like Flower and Garden, Mickey's Not-So-Scary, Christmas, etc.

Over the next few years, we started making several trips a year. We started buying a few pins per trip because they were "good souvenirs" that were "fairly cheap" and "don't take up much room." (Yeah. Right.) More years, more trips, more pins. I'm not going to bore you with the details of our venture off the deep end of pin collecting, but now we make several weekend trips a year in addition to a big trip every September and each time we come back with several handfuls of new pins. That's in addition to the bulk pin lots that Jerry gets for us to trade with castmembers.

We've filled up a large bulletin board and just bought a eight 12x12" cork tiles to display what we have, but how the heck are we supposed to get all of these into a database so that we know what we already have? Suggestions?

This isn't even close to all of them:

Hrm... How to database... that's a good question. I'd think you could use virtually any library database software like LibraryThing or whatever Jer uses for his books. I'd suggest perhaps coming up with some type of geeky naming convention... like...

WDW-RST-POP-2009-1 could be a WDW Pin, Dedicated to a Resort, Pop Century, Purchased in 2009, the first one of that type you bought that year.

DLR-DL-EO-2010-2 could be the second Captain EO pin you bought at Disnelyand park in Disneyland Resort This Year, etc.

That way, if you weren't sure if you had a pin, you could narrow your existing list down first to Disneyland vs WDW; then to resorts or parks; then to specific resort or attraction; then just search through the ones you have for that resort or attraction.

[/too geeky for my own good]

Actually, you should ask Tom Corless... if ANYONE has a system, he does. I think his count is around 10,000!

Pinpics.com They let you check of the ones you have and then you can print your have list when you go anywhere. And it saves your collection.
